Who we are

Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development (OCSSRD) was began by an informal group of 7 people while teaching on the best common practices of agriculture, financial literacy, garbage management and disposal and psychosocial support to the local communities of Lyantonde District during the first months of Covid 19 pandemic as alternative way of living during the lockdown era more especially the vulnerable groups such as Orphans, Children and People with Disabilities, widows and women at large.

It was registered as a Community Based Organisation and is registered with Uganda Registration Service Bureau (URSB) with a letter of incorporation. It was formed in March 2021 with the aim of supporting rural communities using research-based approaches to realize their full potential and participation in decision making processes that would result into their socio-economic empowerment.

OCSSRD Background

Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development (OCSSRD) is a youth-led, member-based, and grassroots organisation that was formed to teach the best common practices of agriculture, financial literacy, garbage management and disposal, psychosocial support alongside other livelihood and socio-economic programs to the last mile communities of Uganda during the first months of the Covid-19 pandemic as an alternative way of living during the lockdown era, especially for vulnerable groups such as orphans, children, TB victims, refugees, people with disabilities, widows, and women at large.

OCSSRD was formed in March 2021 with the aim of supporting rural communities using research-based approaches to enable full realization of their potential and participation in decision-making processes that impact their socio-economic empowerment. Since inception, we have supported schools, community groups, and teenage mothers of Uganda, supplementing government programs.

OCSSRD has since then supported children through primary and secondary schools in Uganda through formal education, vocational studies, guidance and counseling, mentorship programs, skilling programs such as making liquid soap, shampoo, making school chalk, school gardens, and sexual reproductive health rights programs through the Girls Empowerment Challenge.

In communities, we have worked with community women groups like Mpumudde Bwavu Mporogoma Women group, Kasambya Twezimbe Women group, Kasagama Youths Trust, Nakasozi Kinuuka Women group, Nabigoye Women Catering group, and Kilebe Bull Fattening group. Through these community women groups, we have reached the youths and teenage mothers in sexual reproductive health and skilling programs.

These are the districts with very many orphans most whose parents died of HIV/AIDS that left most children infected with HIV/AIDS and orphans that require our helping hand.

Another category is children with disabilities, the traditional communities call them cursed children and are denied their rights of education and health. It is against this background that OCSSRD thought of a solution to this problem hence “Mercy of God Orphanage and Rehabilitation Facility” Target beficiaries: 2000 Scope: Mbarara district and neighboring districts The government of Uganda is trying to address the spread of HIV/AIDS with the help of United States funding but it is not addressing the effects of the affected youths that are not productive.

The orphans with HIV/AIDS and whose parents were succumbed to HIV/AIDS have lost hopes and this has increased the cases of Suicide, loss of education, in accessibility to health services, early pregnancies and death. Children with disabilities are also another category that has been completely been left behind, not documented, no public identity and no support that be included in this program. All these requires to be rehabilitated and raised in Mercy of God Rehabilitation Centre. Mercy of God Orphanage and Rehabilitation Facility shall have the following components; Hostels- The Centre shall have 4 hostels, one for boys and another one for girls. Counseling Room- The centre shall have a counseling room for the children that requires mental and psychological social support Offices-The centre shall have 3 offices (a reception office, a care taker office and the general office) Store-The centre shall have a store for storing materials for the Mercy of God Rehabilitation Centre and for staffs Clinic - The centre shall have a clinic to give medication to the orphans.
