OCSSRD

Who we are

Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development (OCSSRD) was began by an informal group of 7 people while teaching on the best common practices of agriculture, financial literacy, garbage management and disposal and psychosocial support to the local communities of Lyantonde District during the first months of Covid 19 pandemic as alternative way of living during the lockdown era more especially the vulnerable groups such as Orphans, Children and People with Disabilities, widows and women at large.

It was registered as a Community Based Organisation and is registered with Uganda Registration Service Bureau (URSB) with a letter of incorporation. It was formed in March 2021 with the aim of supporting rural communities using research-based approaches to realize their full potential and participation in decision making processes that would result into their socio-economic empowerment.

OCSSRD Background

Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development (OCSSRD) is a youth-led, member based and a grass root Organisation that was formed to teach the best common practices of agriculture, financial literacy, garbage management and disposal, psychosocial support alongside other livelihood and social economical programs to the last mile communities of Uganda during the first months of Covid 19 pandemic as alternative way of living during the lockdown era more especially the vulnerable groups such as Orphans, Children, TB victims, refugees and People with Disabilities, widows and women at large. OCSSRD was formed in March 2021 with the aim of supporting rural communities using research-based approaches to enable full realization of their potential and participation in decision-making processes that impact their socio-economic empowerment. Since inception, we have supported schools, community groups and teenage mothers of Uganda supplementing on government programs. OCSSRD has from then supported the children through primary and secondary schools in Uganda through formal education, vocation studies, guidance and counseling, mentorship programs, skilling programs such as making liquid soap, shampoo, making school chalk, school gardens and sexual reproductive health rights programs through Girls Empowerment Challenge. In communities, we have worked with community women groups like Mpumudde Bwavu Mporogoma Women group, Kasambya Twezimbe Women group, Kasagama Youths trust, Nakasozi Kinuuka women group, Nabigoye Women Catering group and Kilebe bull fattening group. Through these community women groups, we have reached the youths and teenage mothers in sexual reproductive health and skilling program

OCSSRD has played a significant role in supporting teenage mothers in Lyantonde, Kitagwenda, Rukungiri, Kamwenge, Ibanda, Lwengo, Rakai and Rukiga districts by offering HIV prevention services in line with ministry of health guidelines. OCSSRD embraces approaches that target the biggest drivers of HIV epidemic by focusing on the interventions geared at reducing new HIV infections among the Most at-risk populations (MARPS) often referred to as key population (KPs) and priority population.

We give a minimum service package that includes risk reduction counseling, HIV testing, counseling and referral for art initiation, food items, transportation, TB screening and treatment, GBV counseling, STIs screening and treatment, condom distribution, and HIV self-testing kits testing and distribution among others, peer leader and KP focal persons helped in identifying condom distribution points and hot spots that increased a big number reached. The most challenging issue is that teenage mothers and youths are unproductive due to unemployment hence a need for their economic empowerment for their alternative sources of income. OCSSRD from last 2023 has spearheaded other activists in elimination of sexual and gender based violence at household level and at community levels, this was done under Gender, Equality and Economic Justice Program. This is aiming at unblocking the societal patriarchal norms and equal participation in the decision making processes in Uganda. Pastoralists are associated with sexual related issues such as incest, early marriages and women economic injustices. Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development (OCSSRD) has employed a number of interventions through capacity building of stakeholders, civic education engagements, community dialogue and focused group discussions to send a message of economic justice, equal participation in the decision making processes and elimination of sexual and gender based violence. This has been done through OCSSRD member based strategy, the community were mobilized to form 18 women groups, each group ranging from 25-30 member per group making 540 members. These were trained to be community facilitators and send a message on our behalf in different forums. Furthermore, these groups went ahead and formed village SACCOs called Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLA) which has helped them improve household income.

Background

Under, livelihood subprogram, OCSSRD has supported the school going learners in enterprenuership through training of the hands on skills like making liquid soap, shampoo, school chalk saloon and tailoring. This was done in two primary schools (ie Bergen Nursery and Primary School and Afrana Nursery and Primary Schools) and the young people in the communities. The main objective of this project is to enhance the income of young people through skills training in Uganda. This activity has benefited 995 school going learners and 19 community youths across the country. Under this project, we have attracted other organisation through our networks and has supported the community through buying equipment like tailoring machine.

Marketing agriculture products has been key in improving peoples livelihood and this goes hand in hand with methods that protect the environment. We have empowered farmers on the use of fertilizers to improve crop yields on small farms. Intercropping has been adopted by many farmers and this has increased productivity. Greening the environment in town has been done where crops are grown in pots and buckets around compounds, trees to provide shade for crops during the dry spell have been plated thus further protects the environment in a move to maintain good climate and avoid adverse climate changes

People living with disabilities and children living with disabilities is one of the Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development (OCSSRD)’s intergration and inclusion strategy in every program. It is the norm of OCSSRD to PWDs and CWDs included so as they can participate in decision making processes both in their homes and communities. Under income generating activities (IGA) project, OCSSRD has supported people with disabilities with tailoring and saloon skills and equipment for them to participate in money economy. Through OCSSRD’s Education and Research Program, children with disabilities have been sensitized to go school, remain in school and finish the school. Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development (OCSSRD) has also supported the Lyantonde district local government, education department to establish a children with disabilities disability unit in Kabale and Lyantonde district though the work is still ongoing

CSSRD has trained teenage mothers on sexual reproductive health and mental health through safe spaces as provided by Gecode Initiative in Lwengo district. It is always a challenging situation whenever a teenage girl child gets pregnant mostly the age of 15-24 years. We have given hope to such teenagers to maneuver through life mentally and stay strong to face life and fulfil their future dreams through skilling and continuous education through safe spaces provided by Gecode initiative in Lyantonde district. The main objective of this project is to promote sexual reproductive health and mental health of teenage mothers in Uganda. Teenage mothers are always affected mentally and through our psychosocial support under community health we have been able to strengthen and create an impactful and strong teenage mothers with ability to maintain good hygiene and sexual reproductive health behaviors and these include use of reusable sanitary pads, health education program, safe sexual practices, regular medical checkups that are provided at no cost at government health facilities with in the health facilities. This was OCSSRD and mercy clinical laboratory center in Lyantonde district.

Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development (OCSSRD) has under livelihood subprogram supported the vulnerable households and refugees largely from Democratic Republic of Congo in Ugandan refugee settlements of Kisoro, Nakivale and Rwamwanja with relief items, mentorship, training and capacity building. These initiatives target only the disadvantaged households, refugees and families severely affected by HIV/AIDS in Uganda.

OCSSRD in Partnership with the Drops of the Mind Uganda and Connect Africa Foundation has supported 30 school going primary school learners with school fees and all scholastic materials. This is a under a project called “Education Cannot Wait Project” under OCSSRD’s Education and Research Program. These children are from women sexual workers and single mothers in the last mile communities of Lyantonde and Kitagwenda Districts.

Our Programs

Support Education Cannot Wait

Education Cannot Wait is one of the ongoing projects that is aimed at helping school-going learners and students in primary school, secondary school, vocational studies, and university, which started in 2023. The scheme aims at helping 500 students with school fees and 10,000 students with scholastic materials by 2030 in Uganda. This is a signature project that is aimed at providing school fees and scholastic materials to orphans, children with disabilities, children living with HIV/AIDS, and children from vulnerable families in last-mile communities in Uganda. This scheme also helps the beneficiaries access computer literacy skills.

Education Cannot Wait Project is being implemented in 6 districts of Lyantonde, Kitagwenda, Lwengo, Rukungiri, Kabaale, and Kamwenge districts. OCSSRD is implementing the Education Cannot Wait Project under the Education and Research Program with the sponsorship of Drops of Mind Uganda and well-wishers from the United States of America. It is through this project that OCSSRD has invented an initiative to help other school-going children that are not under our full sponsorship program but need to continue with their education.

It is against this background that I request well-wishers, charity organizations, foundations, NGOs, governments, companies, students, and agencies to support the 2026 fundraising drive for scholastic materials.

GENDER, EQUALITY AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE PROGRAM

(Achieve SDG Goal 5 & 8)

Under this program, OCSSRD ensures that through community dialogues, referral pathways, interface engagements, stakeholders meetings, barraza’s and other informative and transformative approaches are used to unblock the societal patriarchal social constructed norms in the last mile communities that has resulted to both economic, social and political injustices in the communities. Sexual and Gender Based Violence, mistreatment of children and other related injustices has increased due to discriminative socially constructed norms amidst OCSSRD interventions. OCSSRD has refocused this program into five employable areas (refer to OCSSRD 2023-2033 strategic focus) in a bid to unblock these norms.

Our Works

Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development together organized a focused group discussion with a donor and commercial sexual workers of Lyantonde town council also known as “ Nekorera jaange” to discuss the issues alternative source of employment.

Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development has done tremendous work in training VSLAs on Gender, Group Dynamics, micro loan service, Business, and Utilization of Credit Scores: VSLA members are taken through comprehensive training, not only in traditional financial skills but also in utilizing digital tools for starting and/or growing their businesses. The training covers gender sensitivity, group dynamics, and leveraging digital credit scores. This is to equip them with relevant skills for the modern market which is continuously leveraging digital transactions like in the case of online open marketplaces. Training on gender dynamics particularly gives youths of both genders and equal opportunity to gain relevant financial and entrepreneurial knowledge. Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development has extensively done awareness on sexual and Gender Based Violence to reduce on family breakups, mistreatment and other related socially constructed norms. COMMUNITY HEALTH PROGRAM

(Achieve SDG Goal 3)

Under community health program, OCSSRD partnership with Mercy Clinical Laboratory and Mercy Health Care Centre is implementing “HIV/AIDS ADAPTATION AND RESPONSE PROJECT” Project whose target are children, Youths (Boys and Girls) and young mothers below 30 years in Lyantonde district living with HIV/AIDS, health camps, sexual reproductive health rights and many other health related projects.

Our works

Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development sponsored a one- week health camp in Rukungiri District at Kinyasaano Health Center IV that consisted of Cancer screening and training, TB screening and Health Education that attracted 2,923 people.

Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development in partnership with Kitagwenda district local government implemented a one-week HIV/AIDS screening and awareness health camp in October 2023 at Nyabbani Sub County Health Center 111, Kitagwenda District. This attracted 3,071 people that involved in HIV/AIDS screening, safe male circumcision, HIV awareness and prevention education.

Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development under HIV/AIDS ADAPTATION AND RESPONSE PROJECT that was implemented in Lyantonde District sponsored early health seeking behavior campaigns that attracted 2,310 to come for general medical checkup from different districts and communities

ECO SYSTEM AND LIVELIHOOD PROGRAM

(Achieve SDG Goal 13, 6, 15)

This program has two departments ie (1) Ecosystems department; under this, Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development (OCSSRD) made a research about the global warming and thereby developing a concept of restoration of climate through “Green the Globe Project” which is aimed at planting one million trees in Lwengo, Kitagwenda, Lyantonde, Kiruhura and Kazo districts in the Ankole - Masaka dry collider noting that this is a signature project. Climate change is one of the emerging issues across the globe and we therefore need to give it attention that it deserves through different climatic conservation initiatives. OCSSRD has also employed different Livelihood approaches in the last mile communities in a bid to improve the communities at household level. OCSSRD helped the refugees in Rwamwanja and Kyangware refugee settlements with relief services during Covid 19 Pandemic when the economy was completely down. OCSSRD in among others has also helped the teenage mothers living with HIV/AIDS houses in Kitagwenda district with the help of Rukobarwomunda for Community Mobilisation and Development (RUCOMODE).

Works

Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development has distributed 3000 different types of tree species to people of Kitagwenda District as a contribution to the Green the Globe Project.

Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development donated 2000 liters of liquid soap to Bergen Nursery and Primary School to improve sanitation and Hygiene in the school. The event was led by the Head teacher (second right) and Director of studies (5th right) of Bergen Nursery and Primary school and OCSSRD Staff

This is Mr Akatujuna Assumprisio, a proud farmer who is being supported by Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development in SMART agriculture. He uses local manure to grow cabbages. OCSSRD gave him 10,000 cabbage seedlings and he now earns between 1,500,000Ugx and 2,000,000Ugx per week

TRAINING AND CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAM

Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development introduced a new program specifically to enhance the capacity and knowledge to the public through advocates of change through mentorship, guidance and counseling, skilling and management skills. Conducting Governance/Leadership Training: By providing training in governance and leadership, participants and enterprises will develop skills such as effective communication, decision-making, problem-solving, and collaboration. These skills empower available young people to understand market dynamics, engage with stakeholders, and adapt to changing environments.

Conducting Stakeholder Engagements at Different Levels: By holding stakeholder meetings at the district, sub county, and parish levels, young people will gain access to discussions and decisions regarding skill development programs. This inclusivity will ensure that the skill programs align with the local job market needs. It will also provide a platform for young people to voice their needs and preferences, leading to more relevant skill training. Community Awareness Campaigns on Community Radios and Events: Community awareness campaigns will help to inform young people about available skill development opportunities. By broadcasting information on community radios and organizing events, more young people will become aware of training programs, workshops, and resources that enhance their skill sets. This increased awareness will encourage them to engage in skill-building activities.

About Me

He is a devoted public servant with over 15 years of experience in implementing both government of Uganda projects and private projects. He holds a Masters Degree in Public Administration and Management from Nkumba University, a Masters Degree in Management Science from Uganda Management Institute, a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Administration and Management from Uganda Management Institute, a Honors Degree in Social Work and Social Administration from Makerer University, a Certificate in Administrative Officer’s Law Course and many other certificates. He worked with NIFAED (NGO) as a Senior Programmes Officer, He worked with the Electoral Commission and currently working with the government of Uganda as a Principal Town Clerk with Kiboga District Local Government. He is a Chairperson Board of Governors with Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development (OCSSRD).

About Me

He is an experienced feminist, an environmentalist, a researcher and a Social worker. He has a vast experience in private and public education. He worked with feminist organizations (both National Organizations and international organizations) at a community level and National level. He has taken part in the development of Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development (OCSSRD) and a founder member. He is doing research of Masters Degree in Management Studies from Uganda Management Institute, he holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Administration and Management from Uganda Management Institute, a Honors Degree in Social Work and Social Administration from Kampala International University, a Diploma in NGOs Development and Choice of the Broad Strategies from Scheme College in Netherlands and he also holds many certificates in different aspects of life. He is the executive Director and the Secretary to the board with of Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development (OCSSRD).

About Me

She has expertise in projects implementation at both National and Local levels with over 10 years of experience. She is Pursing a PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies from Kampala International University, she holds a Masters Degree in Peace Building and Conflict Resolution from Kampala International University, a Honors Degree in Public Administration and Management and many other certificates. She is a Vice Chairperson and an advisor on gender matters and inclusion with Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development (OCSSRD). She has worked with Lutheran World Federation, War Child Canada, Agency for Cooperation in Research and Development Uganda (ACORD-Uganda) and many others. She is passionate about women and gender issues.

About Me

She is a devoted servant of God, a born again christian and an evangelist. She is an educationist and an international family and children expert. She holds a Masters Degree in Laws from Makerere University, a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Administration and Management from Uganda Management Institute, a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from Law Development Centre, a Honors Degree from Makerere University and many other certificates. She is a practicing lawyer, and has lectured in different universities of Uganda and currently is an assistant lecturer at the Law Development Centre. She works with the government of Uganda as an Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions in the office of the Director of public prosecutions and an advisor on matters of law and governance in organizations. She is a Board member and an advisor on government laws, international relations and diplomatic missions with Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development (OCSSRD).

About Me

She is an experienced social worker and welfare of the community. She is a mentor in family and sexual reproductive health and a servant of God and a feminist. She holds a Masters Degree in Management Studies from Uganda Management Institute, a Post Graduate Diploma from Uganda Management Institute and a Honors Degree in Social Work and Social Administration from Makerere University. She currently serves Uganda Prisons Force as an assistant Commissioner with Uganda Prisons Forces. She is a Board member and an advisor on Research, Innovations and Community Engagements with Organisation for Community Social Support and Research in Development (OCSSRD).

Nampera Sylvia

From Kitazigorokwa village, Kinuuka Sub county-Lyantonde district

My name is Nampera Sylvia from Kitazigorokwa village, Kinuuka Sub county-Lyantonde district. I am 16 years of age and a Person With Disability.

I was desperate because of my nature of birth, the public was laughing at me, and they called me different names like “Kasiru ”meaning am Stupid, the curse“ Omukyeeno and “ekyisirani” meaning bad lack and many others. During the civic education meeting with Organization for Community Social Support and Research in Development (OCSSRD), the organization identified me and took me to the technical school where I trained Tailoring.

At the end of the training, I acquired skills and was given equipment to start. My future is very bright now and I can guarantee my daily income from my business. I want to encourage the public not to lose hope in life but to keep on utilizing available opportunities. Lastly, I want to thank Organization for Community Social Support and Research in Development (OCSSRD) for all they are doing while helping the communities more especially the vulnerable communities.

I am Asiimwe Jenifer from kyabuza village kabula Sub County in Lyantonde district. I am aged 17 years I lost my parents 10 years ago due to an accident hence finding it very difficult to go to school and acquiring basic needs .i was frustrated by the situation and I lost hope because there was no one to help but when I attended the community dialogue for OCSSRD my life was changed. The organization supported me and I trained in salon where I acquired a lot of skills and experience that enabled me begin my own business. My name is Tumwekwase Jesca from Rwengwe Village, Rwentuha Parish, Ntara Sub County-Kitagwenda district. I am 19 years old with both parents. I was raped in 2021 by my father after I had denied to have a sexual intercourse with him. Because my mother was sleeping in a bit distant place, he took that advantage in the wee hours and raped me. I feared to report him to police because I suspected that he would do something strange.

I called OCSSRD officer who first took me at Ntara Health Center IV for medical examination and later took me at the police for further processes. Later alone my father was arrested and imprisoned. This made me free from sexual harassment and OCSSRD have taken me through rehabilitation and I can now fit in the communities and proceed with my work. I want to thank all those people who helped me in the process but more especially the help from OCSSRD.

My name is Tindimweba Jesca from Kiziba ward, Kahungye Town Council-Kamwenge district. I was raped at 15 years and impregnated in 2022. I gave birth to my child without any help. I did not know even who and how many reaped me because I was raped at night coming from buying paraffin. When I produced my baby, I did not have money to buy food, medicine and clothes.

I was very desperate to the extent that I wanted to commit suicide. OCSSRD officer identified me by referral and took me to the head office where I was given rehabilitation services, food, shelter and clothing. I am living happily with my child and I pray for God to bless OCSSRD
